Megan's Gardening Tips

Hedges: It is the best time to prune and shape hedges in mid November to ensure their continual health. Remember that hedges need pruning three to six times a year. hedges also need frequent water to keep them alive. If you notice partial death remove the dead part in mid November. This will allow growth in early 2010.

Lawn: Now is the time to apply the final fertiliser of the year and to reduce lawn cutting down to one time a month, as the growth will not be
as fast or as steady.

Prune Trees: Annual pruning at this time of the year will ensure that your trees will stay healthy and in good shape. Do not bleed in early spring as this week be seriously detrimental to their continual existance.

Shrubs: Plant any new shrubs, hedges and climbing roses. Water all plants if insufficinet rain.

Weeds: If you tackle any remaining weeds this month it will reduce the number you have next year. When removing weeds always remove from the root, by hand or with tools. Remove all traces of the weed to ensure it does not grow back again. We would advise not to apply herbicides to weeds in borders, as this will likely kill any actual plants. Don't forget a weed is technically anything that is in a place you do not want it. To avoid weeds growing in places you do not want them, cover any bare patches of soil with 2 inches of mulch. You could also use an old piece of carpet to stop the weeds coming through. If you have weeds on your pathed areas, you could use a thin knife to scrape the weedsout between the slabs. Alternatively you could use a gas powered flame to burn the weeds away being careful not to burn yourself. You can treat weeds in the lawn with fertiliser, as weeds on paths which are unlikely to affect actual plants.
